The precipitated calcium carbonate plant, often called the PCC plant, is designed to manufacture precipitated calcium carbonate with highly efficient, energy-saving, environmentally friendly, and extremely intelligent solutions. The final product is a useful additive widely used in the fields of plastics, papermaking, rubber, coatings, medicine, food, etc. It is an inorganic chemical product made from materials like calcite, marble, limestone, and chalk through a series of chemical reactions.

PCC plant with high-end final particles

Our PCC plant can manufacture precipitated calcium carbonate with a high grade of whiteness and ultra-fine particles, enabling outstanding performance in intense market competition.

Since precipitated calcium carbonate is used for different purposes, it needs to be made in various particle sizes. Correspondingly, the demand for PCC plants is different. Core advantages of the PCC plant from CNBM

capacity compatibility and process matching Capabilities

Our design for the production capacity is compatible with the raw material property, end-use of product, and production scenarios. The distinguished production process meets the varied production capacity.

precise carbonation reaction system

Particle size, crystal shape, and specific surface area can be adjusted by controlling CO₂ concentration, reaction temperature, pH level, and reaction duration. The carbonization system can produce products meeting the needs of different applications.

Improvements of core production equipment

The inner wall of the slaker is coated with a ceramic wear-resistant layer, which extends the equipment’s lifespan to over five years. The grinding mills, especially the vertical mill, have been upgraded and have demonstrated their leading position in China in terms of energy savings.

Intelligent automated control

Mechanical automatic control, PLC automatic control, and online monitoring intelligent control—three modes are available. The production process is in control and stable. The end product is homogeneous and can save long-term running costs.

Low-energy and environmentally friendly design

The production equipment has an advanced structure, taking less space, requiring less maintenance, producing low noise, and being environmentally friendly. The optimization of the water cycle can reduce steam consumption by 20–30% during the drying process.

Consistent and controllable product indicators

Important metrics, such as moisture content, whiteness, and particle size distribution, are well controlled in the reaction and classification process. It guarantees that the product has constant quality and homogeneous particle size for applications such as coatings, plastics, and papermaking.

precipitated calcium carbonate manufacturing process

PCC plant process flow

calcination

Limestone is heated in a lime kiln at temperatures above 900°C. It breaks down into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. The reaction equation: CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂↑

slaking

Add water to the calcium oxide (quicklime) to generate calcium hydroxide, also known as “slaked lime.” Reaction equation: CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ + heat

carbonation

Carbonation is the core step of precipitation. Introduce carbon dioxide gas into lime milk. The calcium hydroxide reacts with CO₂ to form a solid calcium carbonate precipitate. The reaction equation: Ca(OH)₂ + CO₂ → CaCO₃↓ + H₂O

filtration

The calcium carbonate slurry is dewatered using a filter press to obtain a wet filter cake, which is washed several times to remove the impurities.

Drying

The calcium carbonate cake is dried to remove as much moisture as possible.

Griding and grading

The dried calcium carbonate powder is usually too coarse, which needs to be ground by ball mills or similar machines to get finer particles, such as micrometers or even submicrometers.

Finally, the powder needs to be graded. Using airflow or centrifugal grading tools to sort the particles by size. The desired precipitated calcium carbonate has a consistent size distribution and greater activity.

Key Equipment in PCC Plants

  1. Stone Crushers: Crushing limestone to the proper particle size.
  2. Lime kiln: Calcine the limestone to obtain calcium oxide.
  3. Slaking Machine: Reacting quicklime with water to produce a calcium hydroxide slurry.
  4. Carbonator: Control the particle size and morphology of calcium carbonate by adjusting the carbon dioxide quantity and lime milk concentration.
  5. Drying Equipment: Eliminates moisture and lowers the water content to satisfy application and storage needs.
  6. Grinding Machine: Grinding precipitated calcium carbonate to a finer particle size. Ensures that the final product satisfies target fineness requirements.

Recent Cases

Equipment Selection Guide based on PCC application

In plastic products, the use of precipitated calcium carbonate can enhance the surface smoothness and color brightness of the products. In inks and coatings, it improves the covering power and the uniformity of application. In papermaking, it not only improves the whiteness of the paper but also enhances the ink absorption and printing adaptability.

The Plastics Industry

PCC with high dispersion is required in the plastic industry. It is suggested to use a dynamic grading system, ensuring the particle size deviation is below 20%.

The Rubber Industry

The rubber industry focuses on the reinforcement of PCC. We recommend that you set up equipment that applies surface modification in the monitoring system.

coating Industry

A low oil absorption is necessary in the coating industry. You can add a surface treatment link following the ultrafine grinding process.

Precipitated calcium plant cost

The initial investment for a PCC plant with an annual output of 50,000 tons is about 15,000,000 to 20,000,000 RMB. To make the most out of your investment, you’d better pay attention to daily maintenance.

  1. Regularly clean the scale formation inside the carbonator. Citric acid cleaning is a beneficial method that is recommended.
  2. The bearing of grinding mills needs to be controlled at a temperature below 75℃, avoiding impact on the fineness because of overheating.
  3. The system for adding surface modifiers must be kept clean to prevent cross-contamination.
